The heat and humidity over the past couple of days has Environment and Climate Change Canada advising people to watch the skies today. The conditions have even prompted a tornado watch to be issued for the southeast, as severe thunderstorms are expected with the potential for tornadoes.

Tornado watches are issued when the atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornados.

In their daily thunderstorm outlook, the government weather agency explained an unstable airmass will settle in over the area. This could produce severe storms that could dump upwards of 50 millimetres of rain, and come with hail. Strong winds are also expected to be part of any thunderstorms that develop.

We will provide updates on the weather situation as they become available.
