Weyburn will be seeing another busy weekend for out of town guests in our hotels and restaurants thanks to an event taking place at the Weyburn Credit Union Spark Centre.

"The Saskatchewan Soccer Association is the governing body for soccer and in Saskatchewan, and they came down for our [Spark Centre] Grand Opening, and they were really impressed with our facility, and they were impressed with the City," shared president of the Weyburn Soccer Association, Jason Roy. "They went back and decided to host the first leg of the tryouts for the Canada Summer Games, so they'll be creating the start of Team Saskatchewan in Weyburn."

Roy said this is the first weekend of two mandatory weekends that 99 boys in and 80 girls will be trying out for the U-18 team.

"There will be a lot of soccer, so if you're wanting to watch some very talented young athletes that will definitely be the place to go," he noted.

The Spark Centre, in fact, will not be making the walking track available to the public that day for walking. Instead, those hoping to watch the soccer tryouts will to be able to distance while standing around the track and be able to look down on the field and watch the athletes perform.

"I'm really hoping to see some of my Weyburn Soccer Association families come out and watch," he shared. "I'll definitely be in attendance, and we do have some Weyburn athletes who will be participating in these tryouts so there is somebody there for you guys to come on out and cheer on."

The four Weyburn athletes participating this weekend are Brennan Roy, Eva Sieverson, Taya Schmidt, Kristina Junk, Kaleb Berg, and Abby Hayward.

"I think it's just good for Weyburn to know that we're bringing in 180 families this weekend, so that to me is absolutely huge for the community," shared Roy. "When I was doing some studies one time, it said that when you bring people into a community you can average each person is probably averaging $60 a day spent in the community. It's kind of a realistic average these days. That's impressive how there's 180 kids, and if one or two adults, and siblings, are coming with, that's going to be really good for the hotels or restaurants."
