The Midget AAA Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings hit the road this weekend, travelling to Winnipeg to take part in the Midget AAA Challenge at the BellMTS Iceplex. The Gold Wings would be up against some of the best competition from Manitoba and Saskatchewan at the event.

The Gold Wings opened the weekend Friday when they took the ice against the Central Plains Capitals. Weyburn would come away with the win, topping the Capitals 4-1.

Dakota Bowler got things started with a goal at the 6:08 mark of the first period, assisted by Tori McNabb and Nikita Schmidt.

In the second, Central Plains tied it up with a goal from Kirksten Masters, but from there, the Gold Wings took over.

With 2:50 left to play in the second, Lauren Demmans scored for Weyburn. Sydney Keddie and Karleigh MacKenzie picked up the assists on the goal. The strong play from the Gold Wings continued in the third, as Sara Auschstaetter scored a short-handed marker at the 11:34 mark of the period. She was assisted by McNabb on the goal. Then Demmans, on the power play, scored her second of the game with just over four minutes to play. McNabb and Kate Goranson assisted on the goal

Saturday, the Gold Wings took on the Winnipeg Ice in their first game of the day and found themselves up against stiff competition. The Ice scored three times in the first period and would hold on to win the game 5-1.

The lone goal from the Gold Wings was scored in the second period, as Hailey Verhelst scored with the man-advantage. Auchstaetter picked up the assist on the goal.

In their third game of the event, the Gold Wings took on the Interlake Lightning. The Gold Wings would edge out the Lightning to pick up a 3-2 victory.

Weyburn jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, thanks to a pair of goals in the opening six minutes. The first goal was scored by Auchstaetter. Katlyn Muchkowski has the assist. Then, Keddie would make it 2-0 Weyburn at the 5:31 mark of the first, assisted by Bowler.

The Lightning would reply with two goals of their own in the second half of the first period, then the goaltenders settled in to shut the door in the second period.

Neither team was able to find an edge until the final six minutes of the game when Bowler scored an even-strength goal, assisted by Keddie and Auchstaetter.

The Gold Wings closed out the event Sunday as they took the ice against the Yellowhead Chiefs. The two teams would skate to a 2-2 draw to close out the Midget AAA Challenge in Winnipeg.

Yellowhead took the lead in the first period, scoring with just over four minutes to play in the opening frame. Then, much like the late game Saturday, neither team was able to score in the second period, setting up an intense finish in the third.

Reece Pittman got things started for the Gold Wings as she tied the game up 1-1 2:43 into the final period. The tie would last until the final 90 seconds of the game. Then, the Chiefs took the lead with 1:21 to play. Looking to even things up, the Wings pushed, and Bowler scored the game-tying goal with nine seconds to play. Nikita Schmidy and Madison LaFoy assisted on the goal.

The Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings finished the weekend with a record of 2-1-1. They will be back in league action this coming weekend when they travel to Swift Current to take on the Wildcats.
