Winter in Saskatchewan can be treacherous. In fact, earlier this week, Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning for the Weyburn area. While the warning has since ended, a special weather statement has taken its place.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang cautions drivers the weather for this weekend could get messy.

“Especially this weekend, the weather’s going to be a mess, so people should be checking the Highway Hotline before heading out, and checking the weather forecast before heading out,” said Lang. “We know there are lots of people traveling for hockey tournaments and that type of thing, but it’s going to be a messy weekend.”

She added they're keeping an eye on a major weather system expected to move through the province today with the potential for freezing rain Saturday and blowing snow Sunday.

Lang said even though we haven't been as acclimated to the extremes, we're still having a typical Saskatchewan winter.

We’ve had a pretty mild winter so far, and I think we’re just not used to these type of temperatures, but it’s certainly not out of the ordinary for this time of year,” she explained. “The record temperatures, we’re not approaching those, but we know that we can get well into the minus thirties for this time of year. We can also get pretty mild too, so there’s a big range of temperatures that can happen in Saskatchewan.”
