The federal government announced in July they would be helping the province with the addition of passing lanes to Highways 6 & 39. Work is underway on the massive project, and planning is occurring for how it will be handled in the vicinity of many communities, including Weyburn.

It was announced at the time of the funding announcement a stretch of highway directly southeast of Weyburn on Highway 39 will be twinned. Other sections will see the addition of passing lanes.

To help with the construction of the passing lanes, and to help ensure a smooth flow of traffic through the region, a traffic study will need to be conducted.

Weyburn mayor Marcel Roy said there are plans for the study to be done in the coming months.

“Our city engineer and city manager will be a part of the group,” Roy stated. “This will be a traffic study which will be looking at all the traffic flow, and how it will make the best sense to keep the traffic flowing properly on the 39 Highway.”

The study is expected to begin in October, and wrap up at the end of November.

The costs of the study will be shared three ways. The provincial government will be paying for 50 percent of the costs, while the City of Weyburn and Rural Municipality of Weyburn will share the cost of the other half. The exact amounts have yet to be announced.
