The U18 AAA Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings earned their first win of the 2021-22 season, as they travelled up to Battleford for a pair of games against the Battlefords Sharks. The Gold Wings would finish the weekend with a win and a loss.

Saturday night, the Gold Wings would score in the final minutes of regulation to take the lead, avoiding overtime, and winning 2-1.

The Battlefords had taken the early lead in the game when Madison Guitard scored with 6:04 left in the first period to make it a 1-0 game. Just 65 seconds later, the Gold Wings answered back. Julianne Girardin scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Ashton Bender and Hailey Verhelst.

From there, Lexi Peace took over for the Gold Wings, turning aside 15 shots in the second period, and seven more in the third.

With the game looking like it was headed to overtime for the second straight game between the two teams, Verhelst would score on the power play with 2:07 to go in the game. The goal was her first of the season.

Sunday afternoon, the two teams met again, but this time it would be the Sharks coming out on top, skating to a 4-2 victory.

Weyburn would open the scoring with 5:19 left in the first period as Girardin scored her second of the weekend. Her tally was assisted by Ashton Bender and Rilynn Dobson. Then, just 14 seconds into the second Girardin scored her second of the day, this time on the power play. Dobson and Rori Dickie had the helpers on the goal.

From there, the onslaught of shots from the Sharks caught up with Peace. In the third, the Battlefords scored four unanswered goals, giving them a 4-2 win.

The Gold Wings will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Prince Albert to face the Northern Bears.
