The U18 AAA Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings opened their regular season Saturday night as they entertained the Saskatoon Stars at Crescent Point Place. For the Gold Wings, they carried the pace of the play for much of the game, with the exception of when one line was on the ice for Saskatoon. That line would account for four goals en route to a 5-2 win for the visitors.

Saskatoon would open the scoring just past the halfway mark of the first period when Avery Bairos scored her first goal of the game with 9:48 remaining. Then, with 6:08 on the clock, Bairos scored her second of the night on the powerplay to make it 2-0. Ireland Stein would round out the scoring in the first for Saskatoon with 2:04 remaining.

In the second period, the Gold Wings answered back. Riley Dobson would find the back of the net just 1:27 into the period. Her power play goal was unassisted.

Saskatoon answered back just four and a half minutes later. Bairos’ linemate, Keyra Buziak, scored at the 5:57 mark to make it a 4-1 game. Buziak would then score again at 8:37 of the period to make it 5-1.

In the third period, the Gold Wings put on pressure to mount a comeback, and it started with a goal from Kiley Davis 6:19 into the third. She was assisted on the goal by Hailey Verhelst and Ashton Bender. However, Saskatoon netminder Tora Ward kept the puck out of the net for the rest of the game.

The two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at Crescent Point Place. The game starts at 1:00 p.m.
