The 59th Weyburn Rotary Music Festival continues this week.

Approximately 360 students will perform throughout the two-week festival.

The piano portion of the festival wrapped up last week, which saw around 209 students take the stage.

During the second week of the festival from Mar. 13-15, you can hear around 102 vocalists perform while from Mar. 16-17, 43 instrumentalists and bands will entertain.

President of the festival, Deana Mainil, said the quality of music during the two weeks is exceptional.

"The adjudicators every year that come from afar, just rave about the quality of the music in this city," she said.

"(We have) the best piano teachers ... vocal teachers, band teachers, they're just so inspiring to the students."

A surprise to the organizers, last week's blizzard barely put a halt on the festival. Mainil said only two piano performances had to be postponed.

Another hurdle was the number of entries, but Mainil is certain that number will climb in the coming years.

"It's down a little bit, but it kind of goes in cycles that way depending on the age of the students, how many classes they are entering ... as they get older they take on more pieces and are performing more, and it just goes in cycles," she said.

To wrap-up the whole event, the Stars of the Festival is scheduled for Mar. 22 at the Cugnet Centre at 7 p.m.

This event highlights the top performers of the festival's two weeks, which are picked by the adjudicators. Around $7,000 of scholarship money is to be given out during this concert.

Cost for the festival is $3 a session, or $5 for the two weeks.
