After Tuesday's announcement that the public health orders surrounding household gatherings were being tightened, as well as the rise in case numbers of COVID-19, the administration at Weyburn Comprehensive School announced they had made the decision the school would be holding a virtual graduation for their Grade 12 students Wednesday morning.

Principal Ryan Fowler said the ceremony, which is scheduled to be held on June 19th, will be very similar to what the school did in 2020, near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Last year’s ceremony was exceptionally well done,” Fowler said. “We had it contracted out to a professional who made it look professional, and so we’re excited again for what we’re able to present and give our kids for graduation.”

An email sent to parents Wednesday morning explained WCS had been holding off on making a final decision about whether there would be an in-person or virtual ceremony, and due to the unpredictable nature of the restrictions, and without knowing if they will be relaxed by June, this was the best option based on timing. It had been an option in a survey that had been sent out earlier in the school year, and was the first choice by a slim margin, according to the email.

While the ceremony will be done virtually, the school is looking to see what they will be able to do in person for the graduates.

“Even if it’s a certificate with your cap and gown, one at a time,” Fowler added. “It might take us three or four or five days to do that, but if regulations will allow, we will still be looking at some way of doing something in-person.”
