Local Weyburn farmers have been pulling long days to finish up the harvest, and it appears the hard work is paying off.

"A lot of producers are well over half done in the Weyburn area," says Dale Paslawski, local Weyburn area farmer. "Some of our yields are actually quite poor on some crops, but then some farmers apparently are kind of happy with not expecting the yields that they got were a little better."

Crops like durum and spring wheat have been reported as having a higher yield than farmers expected. However, flax and canola are dramatically down from previous years.

The hot and dry weather makes harvest favourable as it makes the crops easier to combine, as well as farmers can continue to combine without interruption from rain. There are some risks associated with the dry weather.

"It's really dry and all the farmers are prepared for machinery equipment fires," says Paslawski. "I carry two fire extinguishers on my combine and if you smell smoke, you've got a fire somewhere."

The dry weather may be good for harvesting crops but it is worrisome for cattle farmers who are worried where they will get their feed for over winter. The sloughs and water sources for the cattle are also extremely dry causing yet another issue.

The next few weeks farmers will be paying attention to the weather and waiting to see how harvest finishes out.
