At last night’s City Council meeting a new commercial incentive program was approved.

The goal of this program is to support new and existing businesses through tax incentives. Projects could be eligible for a 25 percent rebate of the cost of eligible façade and site improvements up to $5,000, up to five years of tax abatement for new construction on a previously vacant property, or tax abatement for one year for a new business in a previously vacant building.

“We're excited about this.” Says Weyburn City Councilor Jeff Richards. “We know that inside the business community that those dollars are also probably going to get spent locally. The renovation dollars will get spent locally, so this money is going to multiply, I would say. Best case scenario we’re overwhelmed with applications, that's what I would hope for.”

Richards says that over the years Council has received comments about having something like this in place.

“Something very standardized, something that's easy to explain. Those are key points, but the bigger thing here is we want to show confidence in our community. We want investment in our community. We want buildings to get upgraded in our community because that's what will help grow our community.”

The program will be implemented on January 1st, 2022, and those interested can contact the Planning and Development Department at 306-848-3221 or Planning@Weyburn.ca.

“They'll have all this literature available to help walk you through how to apply, and then whether or not there are eligibility criteria that have to be met, which there usually is.”
