Today would have been the 100th birthday of beloved animal rights activist and Hollywood legend, Betty White.

With that, animal shelters across the globe are receiving an influx of donations in honour of Betty's ongoing advocacy for rescues, spaying and neutering programs, as well as the overall better treatment of animals, including those living in zoos.

The Betty White Challenge asks people to consider contributing $5 today to their local shelter.

Colleen Morrice, Shelter Manager with the Weyburn Humane Society, said any donations they receive today will be in good timing, as the shelter is still cleaning up after a flood.

"Even five dollars helps us greatly to help us rebuild our shelter at this time," Morrice said.

This after a flood from a burst pipe created much damage at the Weyburn Humane Society's animal shelter.

"We are progressing quite well, with our flooring starting to come up, and some of our drywall coming out," she shared. "Our flood happened on January 8th, and we are quite pleased with how the community has stepped up to help us."
