The Weyburn Oilwomen Association continues to give back to the community, this time by making a donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn. This donation helps to provide positive mentor relationships to youth in our community.

“We didn’t even know about it to be honest so that makes it even better,” said Amy Noureldin, Director of Development and Communications. “They held a golf tournament in June of last year and donated some of the proceeds to us.”

When we asked how the donation helps Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn, Noureldin shared that all sponsorships and donations stay in the community and go directly to providing local youth with enabling life-changing mentoring relationships.

“This money helps match a child with adversities with a positive and caring mentor,” said Noureldin.

Some children continue to be on the waiting list to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister.

“We are always in need of mentors, and especially male mentors,” shared Noureldin. “If you feel like you have a couple of hours a week to be a kid again, and make a difference in the life of a child, then I urge you to give us a call.”

Coming in the fall the organization is expanding its mentorship program into Legacy Park Elementary School.

“The In-school mentoring program which is one hour once a week during the school day, so it’s a really small-time commitment that has a big impact,” said Noureldin. “You hang out for an hour on school property, it has nothing to do with academics or homework, it's simply helping out, doing something fun, giving that child another really good reason to come to school.”
