The senior volleyball teams from Weyburn Comprehensive School were off to tournaments this weekend, with the senior girls playing in the Mega Volley tournament in Regina, and the senior boys at a tournament at the University of Saskatchewan.
The girls were coming off a big win the previous weekend at the University of Regina and found themselves in a stacked pool for the first round of the tournament. They would finish second in the pool stage, after losing to Swift Current, but followed it up with wins over Thom Collegiate and Harvest City.
In the re-pool stage, Weyburn would pick up three wins, going through three formidable opponents from Regina – F.W. Johnson, Riffel and Winston Knoll. This put them into the top eight teams in the tournament, and they were off to the knockout round.
In the quarterfinals, the Eagles earned a win over Moose Jaw Vanier, setting up a rematch with Swift Current in the semi-finals. The Ardens, though, would come out on top once again, beating Weyburn in two straight sets, putting the Eagles into the bronze medal game.
In the bronze medal game, WCS was up against the Greenall Griffins from Balgonie, the team they had beaten the previous week in the gold medal game. This time, it would be Greenall getting the win in straight sets.
The senior girls will now get ready for their home tournament, which will be played this coming weekend, with the action starting Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The young senior boys squad, which has no graduating players this year, would finish the opening stages of the tournament with a record of 1-4. They crossed over to take on Birch Hills to close out the tournament, winning in two straight.
The senior boys are off to Brandon for a tournament this coming weekend.
