There were two playoff games in the Big Six Tuesday night. The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings opened up their best-of-three quarterfinal series with the Oxbow Huskies, while the Bienfait Coalers were looking to even up their series with the Carnduff Red Devils.

In Bienfait, the two teams traded goals through 60 minutes of regulation, and it would take another 22 minutes to decide a winner, as the Coalers picked up a 5-4 win in double overtime.

The first period would see Tayson Holt score his second of the playoffs to give the Coalers the lead before Nico Anderson scored for Carnduff to tie things up.

In the second period, Kody Martin gave the Red Devils the lead with a shorthanded goal before Wyatt Garagan scored on the power play to tie it up 2-2 after 40 minutes.

The third period would see the two teams combine for four goals, with Ben Hiltz scoring his first of the playoffs to put Carnduff back out front, then Daniel Wanner scored for the Coalers to tie things up. Jordan Ross then scored to put Bienfait out front, before Hiltz netted his second of the game on the power play to even things up 4-4 after three periods.

Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period, but then Dayman Wanner scored 2:21 into the second overtime frame to give the Coalers the win.

The third and deciding game of the series will be played Thursday night in Carnduff.

The other game had the Wheat Kings holding off Oxbow in the first game of the series to pick up a 3-2 win and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Zach Douglas scored the opening goal of the game in the first period, and Braden Mellon followed it up with a goal three minutes later to put Yellow Grass ahead 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Neither team scored in the second period, then Liam Rutten would find the back of the net on the power play in the third to put Oxbow on the board.

Yellow Grass replied with the second goal of the game by Mellon to make it 3-1. A late goal from Oxbow’s Brycen Odgers would be the only one tallied by the Huskies in the third, and the score stood at 3-2.

Game two of that series will be played Friday night in Yellow Grass, with game three, if needed, on Saturday night back in Oxbow.
