Last week the Weyburn Police Service responded to a report of an individual who was COVID-19 positive and breaking their quarantine order.

In consultation with Public Health, the Weyburn Police Service located the individual and warned them to remain isolated as required by the current public health order.

"At the end of the day, we have to make sure everybody is complying with the public health order," explained Jamie Blunden, Chief of Police with the Weyburn Police Service. "If you're identified by Saskatchewan Health that you need to remain isolated and you don't remain isolated, then we're going to come down to investigate."

Blunden explained that failure to following quarantine orders or public health orders can result in a $2800 ticket. While they try to avoid handing out tickets where possible, Blunden says they will if needed.

"We're trying to do the awareness piece and the educational piece, but at some point in time we've done that quite a bit," Blunden added. "If the individuals out there want to put everyone else at risk, then we will start issuing tickets."

While no ticket was issued during last week's incident, the Weyburn Police Service is encouraging residents to abide by the current orders in place. If you are COVID-19 positive, you are required to follow the quarantine orders that the Saskatchewan Health Authority issues.

"We have health care workers out there who are putting their lives on the front lines, more than the police service sometimes," Blunden concluded. "If somebody is doing it because they slipped up and something happened, we're going to listen to what they have to say. If they do it a second time, you're going to get a ticket."
