The Weyburn Police Service has been out in force today, along with other member agencies of the Combined Traffic Services Section, holding a traffic blitz. The officers have been focusing on traffic offences such as distracted driving, improper seatbelt use, and speeding.

Constable Kalin Wiebe is with the Weyburn Police Service and is working on the blitz.

“Fail to use a seatbelt, and using an electronic communication device, or just simply not paying attention to what they’re doing, so distracted driving is really what we’re seeing this morning,” Cst. Wiebe explained while set up on 3rd Street in Weyburn, between Railway Avenue and Highway 39.

In just a short period of time, there were six tickets handed out at the location. Another nine offences were spotted, including improper window tint, four drivers using cell phones, and four drivers without a seatbelt, in the area. Those drivers were not stopped due to not enough officers available to assist, as they were already dealing with a traffic stop.

Distracted driving is one offence which Cst. Wiebe is hoping people get the message about.

“I will say that five seconds or ten seconds a person is taking to make a phone call or text message could be those five or ten seconds where you have to make a very quick decision to avoid a collision or anything such as a child running out on the street.”

The member agencies participating in the blitz include the Weyburn Police Service, the Regina Police Service Combined Traffic Service Section, the Canadian Pacific Police Service and the Weyburn RCMP detachment. The blitz will be held at various locations throughout the city.
