It was not a cheap learning experience for one lead-footed driver this week.

Weyburn police stopped a driver speeding near McTaggart on Tuesday afternoon.

“One of our officers were just outside of Weyburn and they clocked a vehicle on radar in excess of 150 kilometres an hour, stopped them, and the individual did get a ticket,” said Chief of the Weyburn Police Service, Marlo Pritchard.

In fact, 152 km/H was the exact speed he was going. The fine for such an excessive speed is more than $850.

“In this case, the person also had his vehicle seized for seven days,” said Pritchard. “So, not only is it dangerous to himself and others on the road, travelling at that speed, there is a substantial cash consequence.”

He said the consequences of these types of offences do extend well into the future.

“A lot of the offences under the Traffic Safety Act is points against your license,” he explained. “Not only do you get a fine on the spot, there will be points put on that individual’s license and depending on how many points a person accumulates through offences, your driver’s license can get very high very quickly.”

Speeding tickets, and even hefty fines and impounded vehicles, are preferable, nonetheless, to high-speed vehicle collisions resulting in fatalities.
