There's still time to sign up your spring calves under the 2014 Western Canada Price Insurance Program.

Under the program Calf insurance is available to purchase from Saskatchewan Crop Insurance until May 29, 2014.

The risk management program insures producers against an unexpected drop in price over a defined period of time.

Rancher Harold Martens took advantage of the program insuring his calves on Wednesday.

"We insured our calves for $2.10 a pound, for a 575 pound calves in the 10th of November and that's guaranteed," said Martens.

With the program Producers pay a premium to receive forward price coverage and if the market price falls below the coverage price, the producer receives a payment.

"Never have had that happen before in my life, so it's an interesting opportunity and actually many people are telling me it's time we got there," said Martens.

The Calf Insurance is available through Saskatchewan Crop Insurance until May 29, 2014.
