The Big Six Hockey League began play this past weekend, with five games to start the regular season schedule. The games would provide exciting hockey across southeastern Saskatchewan, beginning with a pair of games Friday night.

The Midale Mustangs were in Carlyle to face the Cougars Friday. The two teams would need more than 60 minutes to find a winner, with Midale picking up a 4-3 win in overtime thanks to Brad Tomiski.

Midale had goals from Connor Burk, Taylor Vandesype and Garrett Sherlock in addition to the game-winner from Tomiski. At the other end of the ice, Ben Johnstone scored twice for Carlyle, while Mason Belanger added a single.

The game between the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings and the Huskies in Oxbow was a chippy affair with the two teams combining for a total of 72 penalty minutes, most coming in the second period. It would be the Wheat Kings who came out on top, though, winning 6-4.

The Wheat Kings had a pair of goals from Thomas Carlton and singles from Mike Onstad, Drew Fellner, Kashton Janzen and Devin Cobbold. Ryley Giblett, Bryson Mayer, Steven Henderson and Derek Cooney replied for the Huskies.

Saturday saw the first game for the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings in the Big Six Hockey League, with the team beginning play this season. They found themselves on the wrong end of a blowout, however, falling 13-2 to the Carnduff Red Devils.

Carnduff had hat tricks from Trevor Geiger and Blake McMillen, while Matt Audette picked up an eight-point night with a goal and seven assists. Jake Boyes had a pair of goals for Carnduff, with singles from Cody Moore, Garrett Fitzpatrick, Kody Martin and Braden Dumaine. James Gallagher and Matt Bean scored for Kipling.

Yellow Grass was on the road again, this time taking on Bienfait Saturday. It would be the Coalers who earned the win, though, doubling up Yellow Grass 6-3.

The Coalers were lead by Keegan Malaryk who scored a pair of goals. The other goals for Bienfait came from Carson Benning, Wyatt Garagan, Dallas Kickley and Dylan Herzberg. Yellow Grass replied with goals from Brendon Vertefeuille, Brad Riege and Devin Cobbold.

Midale was also in action again on Saturday, this time travelling to Arcola for a game against the Combines. The Mustangs improved to 2-0 with a 7-2 victory.

The Mustangs were led by Brad Tomiski and Garrett Sherlock, who had a pair of goals each in the win. Also tallying for Midale were Matthew Geske, Steven Lindenbach and Adam Ziegler.

Rhett Palmer and Kendall Oliver replied for the Combines.
