A tenth inning walk-off solo home run from Wade Weinberger lifted the Weyburn Beavers to a 5-4 win over of the visiting Regina Red Sox Monday night. The win extended the Beavers winning streak to 13 games to start the 2018 WMBL season.

“When I saw it up, I was like, okay, that’s gone,” Weinberger said after the game. “Then it started cutting back down, so I said, I need to start to trot, just in case it hits the fence.”

The home run was Weinberger’s second of the season since arriving in Weyburn last week.

Once again, the bullpen from the Beavers held the opponents to no runs. Over four innings, Ken Williams, Brodie Stairs and Eric Evans held Regina off the board and limited them to just one hit. Evans was on the mound to earn the win. Starting pitcher Conner DiNaro went six innings, giving up four runs while striking out one.

“It’s pretty awesome that we’re able to come back late in these games, every single time,” said Evans. “One of these days it would be nice to get the starters a win, but us bullpen guys are stealing them.”

The Beavers did take an early lead in the game, thanks to a leadoff triple from Corey Wheaton. He was brought home by Keaton Greenwalt in the next at-bat.

Regina got on the board in the third inning, with an RBI single from Adam De La Cruz. An error on a pickoff attempt at second allowed Wesley Moss to cross the plate shortly after, giving Regina a 2-1 lead.

Regina built the lead up to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly from Jake Wilson in the third.

The Beavers got back on the board in the fifth, after Wheaton notched another stolen base, then was brought in with an RBI single from Greenwalt, who finished the game going 1-for-3 with two RBI.

A sacrifice fly in the sixth restored the lead for Regina to two runs, thanks to Matt DeNeau.

Then the comeback began for the Beavers.

With reliever Anthony Race now on the mound for Regina, he committed a balk, allowing the runners to advance a base. This brought in Greenwalt, who was on third base. The inning would be a short one for Race, as he was pulled from the mound after hitting two batters with pitches, and couldn’t show a lot of control.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the Beavers down by one, a number of defensive change for the Red Sox had De La Cruz move from second base to the mound. There, he walked the first batter he faced, letting pinch hitter Luke Lubinieki get into scoring position. The next batter, catcher Omar Prieto, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in the tying run.

In the top of the tenth inning, Evans struck out the side, allowing the chance for Weinberger to hit the game-winning homer.

The Beavers will now look to take their winning ways back on the road, after winning out during their homestand. They are in Melville Tuesday night, and then have an early game in Melville Wednesday. They finish off the week with a road game in Swift Current and then host Yorkton Friday night at Tom Laing Park.
