It wasn’t quite how the Bantam AA Whitecap Resources Wings wanted the 2018-19 season to end. They fell 4-3 to the Swift Current Broncos in double overtime Sunday, giving the Broncos a 2-1 win in the best-of-three SAAHL South quarterfinal series. The Wings rallied back after trailing 3-0 in the first period to force the extra time, but it would be the home team who scored the game-winning goal.

The Broncos jumped out to their lead quickly, with Daniel Ganert scoring just under three minutes into the game. It was followed up with a goal from Colton Leahy to make it 2-0 at the 4:46 mark of the period. Then, Rhett Dekowny scored for the Broncos to make it 3-0.

The Wings, pushed back onto their heels, dug in deep, and rallied.

It started with Cooper Walbaum scoring a power-play goal with just 31 seconds left on the clock in the first period. The unassisted goal sent the two teams to the dressing room with Swift Current up 3-1.

In the second period, it would be the goaltenders who would show off, as Dylan Ernst turned away all 12 shots he faced in the period, while at the other end, Swift Current netminder Rylan Hildebrand stopped eight. Ernst would continue the perfect play through the third period as well, while Hildebrand game up two goals in the third period.

The Wings pulled within a goal at the 7:24 mark of the period when Ty Mason scored on the power play with over 12:30 left on the clock. His goal was assisted by Van Eger and Cooper Walbaum.

Then, Ty Boren even things up as he scored an even-strength goal with 5:26 remaining. His goal was assisted by Daxin Peterson and Ty Mason.

The two teams then headed to overtime.

After an initial 10 minute period, nothing was settled, forcing the two teams to head to a second overtime period. There, the Broncos took advantage of a miscue by the Wings. Leahy scored his second of the game on the power play with 6:10 left to go in the extra period.

The Broncos now advance to the SAAHL South semifinals, where they will face the Regina Aces.
