It wasn’t the result the Weyburn Beavers were hoping for in their first visit to Mitchell Field in Swift Current Monday, as they fell 10-5, a day after handing the 57’s a lopsided loss of their own.

The 57’s started their scoring in the first inning. Beavers starting pitcher Sloan Dieter walked the first two batters faced, and then, with bases loaded, hit Mason Brown, allowing a run to score. Another two walks with the bases loaded brought in two more runs before Swift Current added two more runs with a Cole Thibodeau single to left field.

In the third inning, two more runs from Swift Current would bring in an end to the night for Dieter. He went 2 ⅓ innings, giving up seven earned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking five. Conner Starke came on in relief and would pitch 3 ⅔ innings himself, allowing two earned runs, and striking out one. Brodie Stairs and Carson Perkins each pitched an inning in relief to close out the game.

The 57’s added one more run in the third and then scored two more in the fourth, making it a 10-0 lead just past the halfway mark. The pitching from Swift Current was strong, with starter Garrett Goodall lasting four innings. Aiden Goodall, Ernesto Romero, Devin Schultz and Cole Thibodeau finished off the game on the mound.

The Beavers did start a rally in the eighth inning, which started off with Cam Williams and Ulysses Fluellen being walked. Carlos Flores then smacked a triple to right field that brought in both runs. The next batter, Evan Weidner scored Flores with a sacrifice fly. Brady Nygaard then hit a home run to bring in the Beavers within six runs. In the top of the ninth, Weyburn added one more run when a double to right field by Fluellen brought Williams across the plate.

The Beavers now get ready for two home games against the Brooks Bombers, Wednesday, and Thursday. This will be the first time in the team’s history the Bombers visit Weyburn. Last year, the Beavers took both games against the Bombers in Brooks by a combined score of 12-4.
