The Weyburn Beavers will be looking to continue the success in recent years when the season starts on June 1st. The team held their annual general meeting Monday night.

The team did lose a little bit of money last season, mostly due to a shortened playoff run. However, season tickets were up last year, as were overall gameday revenues. Expenses were also kept under tight control for the year, setting the team up into a good position for the 2017 season.

In all, the Beavers spent $153,000 in 2016 to operate the team. This included everything from billet fees for the players, to the cost of travel for away games. On the flip side, the team brought in just under $148,000 in revenues. This was slightly down from 2016, although there were three fewer home games due to the first round exit in the playoffs.

It was formally announced Phil Curtis would be returning as head coach for a fifth season. His brother Corey is returning as an assistant for a third year. The team has carried two assistants in the past, but whether they will this season hasn’t been determined yet.

The season will start on the road this year, as the Weyburn Oil and Gas Show will be in town at the beginning of the year. The team will play their home opener on June 9th, entertaining the Moose Jaw Miller Express. Other highlights of the season include a matinee game on Father’s Day, the traditional Alberta road trip in July which will see the Beavers make their first ever trip to Fort McMurray, and the season ending on July 30th with a game against the Yorkton Cardinals.
