The Weyburn Beavers returned to the familiar confines of Tom Laing Park Sunday night and came away with a 5-1 win over the Regina Red Sox. The win improves the Beavers to a three-game lead over Regina for first in the East Division of the WMBL and drops the team’s magic number to clinch a playoff berth to just five.

The Beavers were led offensively by a two-run home run in the third inning from Felix Correa. It was his first homer of the season.

“I didn’t even know the ball went out. I was just looking for my pitch,” Correa said after the game.

On the mound, another strong performance from Ryan Johnson. The seasoned veteran went seven innings, striking out eight, and giving up just the one run on three hits. Shandon Herrera and Eric Evans pitched an inning each to close out the game.

The Beavers added to their lead in the fifth inning, with some deft base-running from Corey Wheaton. The outfielder got on base with a single. He then stole second, and then third. A throwing error by Regina catcher Matt DeNeau on the steal at third allowed Wheaton to advance home, making it 3-0 Weyburn.

The Red Sox would get on the board in the sixth, with a similar play, as Wesley Moss ran home after stealing third, the chance opening up due to an error by Beavers catcher Omar Prieto.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Beavers restore the three-run lead. With bases loaded after an intentional walk, Luke Lubinieki hit the ball to short, forcing a fielder’s choice. The shortstop opted to throw to first to get Lubinieki, allowing Prieto to score from third.

In the seventh, the Beavers would put one more run up, as Nolan Machibroda hit a triple, which cashed in Prieto.

The Beavers are back in action Monday night. They host the Swift Current 57’s at Tom Laing Park, with the first pitch just after 7:00 p.m.
