Garrett Waters went the distance on the mound, and Ulysses Fluellen drove in two runs, including the game-winner, as the Weyburn Beavers notched a walk-off win over the Moose Jaw Miller Express Sunday afternoon.

The Miller Express were the first to make a mark on the scoreboard, though. Ty Schindel took the opening pitch of the game and sent it over the fence for an early 1-0 lead. After giving up the home run, Waters settled in on the mound, and went to work, limiting the chances for Moose Jaw. Over the course of the nine innings, he struck out six, walking one, while giving up two earned runs.

The Beavers would find their way onto the scoreboard in the third inning, when Fluellen, with bases loaded, took advantage of an error by the shortstop to get on base. The error scored Neil Ring.

Moose Jaw would regain the lead in the top of the fourth. Ben Dalke scored on a single to left field by Robbie McKinney. Then, the Beavers would take the lead themselves in the bottom of the inning.

Cam Williams and Evan Weidner crossed the plate on a double to left field by Brett Young with bases loaded. It would have been three runs, but Ring was put out at home after a heads up play by the Moose Jaw third baseman.

In the fifth inning, Moose Jaw would add one more run, after an error by Weidner at second base. This allowed Scott Platt to cross home plate.

In the middle of the sixth inning, the field was cleared for a short rain delay just as the Miller Express made a pitching change. Grant Westmoreland came in for starter Jesse Marks, and while the Beavers were able to get runners into scoring position after a few errors and a walk, they couldn’t capitalize on the fresh pitcher, leaving the score tied at three.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Beavers looked to hold off Moose Jaw, to stay in a position for the walk-off win. Waters walked Adam Cook, and this lead to Beavers head coach Phil Curtis coming out to the mound for a chat.

“He asked me if I wanted it, and I wanted it, so I capitalized on it,” Waters said about the chat on the mound. Waters then forced the next batter to pop up to first, giving the Beavers the chance for the win.

The first batter was Anthony Wiggins, who was hit by a pitch. With a runner on first, Fluellen then came up to the plate, and smacked a solid drive along the third base line, deep into left field. This allowed Wiggins to make the trip from first to score the game-winning run.

The Beavers will now prepare for the short trip up Highway 39 to Moose Jaw Tuesday, where they will take on the Miller Express. The next home game for the Beavers is Friday when they host the Yorkton Cardinals.
