A two-hour delay due to weather took away the momentum the Weyburn Beavers had early in Monday night’s game and then ended up falling 7-4 for the Swift Current 57’s. The game was just the second loss at home this season for the Beavers, both of which came at the hands of the 57’s.

The 57’s took a lead in the second inning with a two-run home run from Ben Komonosky, and a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

The Beavers came out to tie things up in the bottom half of the inning, and they started with a solo home run from Corey Harrell, his seventh of the year. Weyburn followed it up with an RBI single from Wade Weinberger, which he stretched into a triple. Cam Williams then brought in Weinberger.

With Williams on first, and Gabe Melendez coming up to bat, a flash of lightning with skies looking like they were ready to open up at any moment prompted home plate umpire Trevor Drury to clear the field.

The decision was made to pull out the tarp, with storms raging all around Weyburn. The rains, however, never fell, and after 20 minutes, the lightning had moved on. The game, however, held off for another 90 minutes before resuming, as the teams waited for the umpires to resume play.

Once play did resume, the Beavers were unable to capitalize with the runners in scoring position, and the game went on tied 3-3.

In the top of the third, the 57’s took the lead and never looked back, as Jerad Dokey hit an RBI single which brought in two more runs.

After the third, the night was over for starting pitcher Reid Wall. Wall pitched just three innings but did have the lengthy delay between innings thanks to the weather delay. Over those three innings, he struck out three and gave up five runs.

Ken Williams came on in relief for the Beavers. He threw the last six innings, striking out six, but also giving up two runs.

The 57’s used seven different pitchers in the game, with Brock Gilliam earning the win on the mound. Nick Hooper was credited with the save.

The Beavers will be back in action Tuesday night. They travel to Moose Jaw for a game against the Miller Express. The next home game will be Thursday when Moose Jaw makes the return trip to Weyburn.
