The Weyburn Beavers improved to 4-2 on the season, after a late game rally Wednesday night to beat the Cardinals 6-1 in Yorkton. The win closes out a six-game road swing to kick off the 2017 campaign for the Beavers, who will now get ready for their home opener Friday against Moose Jaw.

The Cardinals were the first to get on the board, when Caden Rosholt singled to left field off starting pitcher Austin Gurr, allowing Hank Forrest to come across home plate. The Beavers would respond in the top of the sixth inning, when Cam Williams singled to center, scoring Zach Frazier.

The pitching was on point, as was the defense, for both teams through the first eight innings of the game. Gurr went 6 ⅔ innings for the Beavers, allowing just the one run on four hits while striking out one. His counterpart for the Cardinals, Tyson Black, last 5 ⅔ innings, allowing the one run, and striking out four.

Beau Rabedeaux came on in the seventh to replace Gurr and pitched the eighth inning. He would be credited with the win. Cody Pamperin pitched the ninth but didn’t get credited with the save.

In the ninth inning, the Beavers had their bats come alive, as they would score five runs. It all started when Carlos Flores brought home Brady Nygaard with a single to center. After a Yorkton pitching change, the offense continued. Zach Frazier would hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Evan Weidner. The Beavers would then load the bases, thanks in part to two walks on 10 pitches by Cardinal pitcher Mitchell Worthington. Anthony Wiggins was one of those walked, and it allowed Flores to cross home plate.

The next batter was Cam Williams. He hit a single to right field, and speedsters Wade Weinburger and Josh Trybuch crossed home plate, giving the Beavers the 6-1 lead, which would be the eventual final.

The Beavers are now in second place in the WMBL Eastern Division, a half game back from Swift Current. The Beavers will take on the Moose Jaw Miller Express Friday, and the Swift Current 57’s will be in town for games Saturday and Sunday.
