The Weyburn Beavers carried a three-game winning streak into Melville Tuesday morning, as they prepared for a rare morning game against the Millionaires. The game was played in front of school kids from the Melville area, who were treated to a day at the ballpark as a field trip.

The kids would be treated to a hometown win, as the Beavers fell 9-1, thanks in part to two home runs in his first two at-bats from Marshall McPherson, including a three-run blast in the first inning.

Carson Perkins got the start on the mound for the Beavers, and lasted just three innings, giving up four runs, while striking out three. Anthony Wiggins took his place on the mound, and Wiggins had a rough go in the fifth inning. The Millionaires scored five runs in the fifth, and Wiggins was finished at the end of the inning, with Brodie Stairs closing the game out. Stairs struck out four in three innings while keeping the Millionaires off the board.

The Beavers struggled to find their offense throughout the game. While they did get runners on base, they weren’t able to bring them home, stranding 12 over the course of the game. The lone run for Weyburn came in the fourth inning. Carlos Flores got on base after an error by the shortstop. He stole second, then a single from Evan Weidner brought Flores home.

The Beavers return to action Wednesday night. They head up to Yorkton for a game against the Cardinals. It is the final stop on a six-game road swing to start the series for the Beavers. They play their first game of the season at home Friday when they host the Moose Jaw Miller Express.
