With just seven games remaining on the schedule in the Big Six Hockey League, not all of the playoff seeds have been determined. After the game Thursday night, though, there was one less spot to be concerned about, as the Bienfait Coalers ensured they will finish fifth, as they beat the Midale Mustangs 3-1 at home.

With the win, the Coalers are now alone in fifth place. While they have one game remaining, if they end up in a tie with the Carlyle Cougars for fourth, the Cougars hold the tiebreaker between the two teams.

The Coalers jumped out to an early lead when Preston Erickson scored just 35 seconds into the game. He was assisted on the tally by Keegan Malaryk.

It wouldn’t take long for the Mustangs to tie things up. Just over three minutes later, Garrett Sherlock found the back of the net behind Zack Miller, making it a 1-1 game. Sherlock’s goal was assisted by Grant Jensen.

In the second period, the Coalers would take the lead late in the frame. With just under three and a half minutes remaining, Jayden Storozuk scored on Derek Tendler, making it a 2-1 game. The goal was assisted by Levi Kress and Dallas Kickley.

In the third period, the Coalers added an insurance marker, when Matt Bourassa scored at the 6:57 mark. The win gave the Coalers the 3-1 victory and secured the fifth place seed.

For the Mustangs, they can finish sixth if they win over the Redvers Rockets Friday night. If the Mustangs lose, they could slip to seventh place if the Wawota Flyers win both of their games, and close their goal differential for the season to less than six goals.

One of the survivor series match-ups for the league has already been determined. The eighth-place Oxbow Huskies will take on the ninth-place Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings in a two-game total point series. It will open on Wednesday in Kipling.
