The Weyburn Beavers are gearing up for 2018, looking to improve on a 2017 season which saw them on the cusp of the East Division championship, before falling in game five to the Swift Current 57’s.

Phil Curtis is returning as the head coach to the team this season. It will be his 5th year behind the helm of the team which has seen improvement nearly every year. He will be joined once again by his brother Corey, and former Beavers pitcher Scott Beever.

“Really excited to have Scott come up,” Curtis said. “Corey has pretty much been by my side the whole time, so happy to have both of them.”

The team will have a strong core of returning players. They include pitchers Ryan Johnson, Brodie Stairs, Landon Mostellar and Weyburn’s Eric Evans. When it comes to the talent at the plate, and in the field, Wade Weinberger is once again coming up from Bryant College, along with teammate Ty Scott. Cam Williams will be back at third base, and Corey Harrell is back in Weyburn this season as well.

Curtis was tight-lipped about some of the recruiting done so far but did mention he has had some help from former players in letting potential players know about Weyburn. Two of those players are Carlos Flores and Luis Jimenez.

“I always lean on my guys who aren’t coming back anymore to see what’s out there, and those two, in particular, have referred a couple of players to us - Felix Correa and Omar Prieto, two really good bats that we’re excited to have come up.”

The Beavers will be opening the season on May 31st when they look to get their win back from the 57’s in Swift Current. The home opener will be the following night when the Beavers host the Regina Red Sox.
