A graduated Weyburn Red Wing forward has landed himself a pro hockey contract in Sweden. Drew Anderson has officially signed with Osby IK in the Swedish Division 2 League.

Anderson was acquired from Waywayseecappo in November of last season and battled injuries in his 20-year-old year. He played 33 regular season games for the Wings and both playoff games, tallying 10 goals and 26 points. He was arguably the Wings most consistent player down the stretch and was a big part of the playoff push the team made.

"I'm very excited but also super nervous. I haven't been away from my family for more than four months at a time so it's definitely going to be a challenge," Anderson said. "I'm definitely looking forward to experiencing European culture and just getting to travel all over Europe in general."

The Portage la Prairie native will turn 21 in July and will undoubtedly be getting some good life experience. He's been playing competitive hockey his whole life and signing his first pro contract was something Anderson won't soon forget.

"It's a dream come true, but I'm not satisfied until I get to that top league. I got tons of work to do still," he noted.

There will be a little time to celebrate before he begins to train and prepare for the 2019/2020 season. He will head over to Sweden later in August.

Before Weyburn, Anderson had stops in Steinbach and Waywayseecappo before finishing his Junior career in the Opportunity City. In all, he played 168 games at the Junior A level. He knows his time in the SJHL and MJHL was crucial to his development as a hockey player.

"It helped a lot getting the exposure I needed and I definitely wouldn't be in this situation if it wasn't for Junior A hockey," Anderson said. "It's going to be a big adjustment though, jumping from junior to pro hockey."

While the results weren't necessarily there for the Red Wings this past season, it has helped further the careers of a few players and that is something to be considered a success.
