It wasn't the start to the season the Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings were hoping for, as they lost 7-0 to the Swift Current Wildcats Saturday night.

Tom Harrison, head coach of the Gold Wings, says the jitters of his team was one factor in the loss.

“I think it showed,” explained Harrison. “They had a rough start, got a goal in the first couple of seconds, and they were just swinging while for a little bit and it took about half the game to settle them down.”

The goal came from Carissa Hogan of the Wildcats, seven seconds into the game after she took advantage of a bouncing puck that made its way past the Gold Wings defenders, beating Weyburn goalie Amara Lewendon.

Swift Current would score two more goals before the end of the period, extending the lead to 3-0. The Gold Wings worked to try to generate chances but encountered bounces, and Wildcats netminder Harper Davey.

Swift Current would add two more in the second period, including a power-play goal on a 5-on-3 advantage, with two more in the third to round out the scoring.

Despite the loss, the Gold Wings had a positive outlook, including forward Mahteya Dumelie.

“It’s the first game. We’ve got to get the bumps out but when we get the bumps out, and we start working better together, the games get better,” Dumelie said after the game.

The crowd stayed behind the team throughout the game, which was another positive Peyton Mabee took away from the night.

“It’s great especially after last year, our fans still stayed with us, and if we just keep our fan base, it will be good, and it helps us,” said Mabee.

The Gold Wings will take on the Wildcats again Sunday afternoon at Crescent Point Place. The game starts at 1:30 p.m.
