The Weyburn Red Wings dropped their second game in a row Tuesday night, falling 5-1 to the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox. The Red Wings found themselves behind early and were unable to muster a sustained offense to rally back. It wasn’t for a lack of trying though, with the Wings hitting a number of posts and a number of big saves by Notre Dame goalie Jacob Standen held off Weyburn.

Notre Dame opened the scoring in the first period when Zack Kosteniuk notched his seventh of the year. From there, it would be a long time between goals, as neither team would be able to find the back of the net until the last three minutes of the second period. Then, Curtis Wiebe’s eighth of the year extended the Hounds lead to 2-0. With just seven seconds remaining in the period, Jared Hamm would score a power-play goal, making it a 3-0 game heading into the final period.

The Hounds would make it a 4-0 lead when Riley Perka beat Arik Weersink with a shot off the faceoff just 38 seconds into the frame.

The Red Wings looked to find a way to beat Standen, and it would be rookie Jordan Kazymyra who would end the shutout bid. Kazymyra scored on a wrist shot with just under five minutes, putting some life back into the Wings bench as they took momentum away from Notre Dame. The comeback attempt would be snuffed out, though, as Chance Longjohn scored his 13th of the season with just under two minutes remaining in the game.

The Red Wings will now have a week off from game action before they return to the ice. Next Tuesday, they embark on their second northern road swing of the season. They will play four games in five nights, starting in Nipawin.
