Home runs in the tenth inning from Josh Donaldson and Justin Smoak lifted the Toronto Blue Jays to a 7-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics Wednesday night. The win helped the Jays avoid a sweep in their first series on the west coast this season.

Donaldson’s homer, a two-run shot to left center, broke the tie, while Smoak’s blast was his second of the game and 17th of the campaign.

The Jays got on the board in the second inning, when Smoak hit his first home run of the game. It was followed up by a three-run homer from Kevin Pillar later in the frame. The A’s would tie the game up at four in the fifth after a sacrifice fly from Chad Pinder.

On the mound, Francisco Liriano went five innings for the Jays, striking out five, allowing three earned runs, and walking one batter. A’s starter Jharel Cotton last six innings in his first career start against the Jays, striking out four, walking four, and giving up four runs on four hits.

The Blue Jays have Thursday off before they head north to Seattle for a three-game series against the Mariners.
