The Toronto Blue Jays had the opening of their season go from bad, to really bad, Sunday afternoon. They lost not only their game to the Baltimore Orioles, but southpaw starter J.A. Happ as well.

The Orioles came out on top of the scoreboard with an 11-4 victory. The Jays, who are now 2-10, continue to struggle through the worst start in franchise history.

Happ started the game for the Jays, before leaving in the 5th inning with soreness in his left elbow. Happ was having a strong start, before he heard a pop in his elbow during the 4th. He faced two batters before leaving the game. He is the latest Jay to go down with an injury, as Aaron Sanchez is on the 10-day disabled list with a blister on his right middle finger, and Josh Donaldson missed his third game with a calf strain.

The Jays looked out of sorts against the Orioles. Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy held the Jays scoreless through six innings, while striking out six. The Orioles were helped out on offense by the bat of Trey Mancini, who had a three run blast, and a solo shot to take the wind out of the sails of the 38,000+ in attendance at the game.

Happ’s line in the game was also fairly solid, going 4 ⅓ innings, striking out three and giving up four hits. Once he left, though, was when the Orioles came to life. While Happ was credited with on run against in the fifth inning, he was off the hook for the remaining runs, as Baltimore built up a 10 run lead in the eighth inning.

In addition to the two home runs from Mancini, Manny Machado and Craig Gentry also went yard for the Orioles. Toronto attempted to rally back in the final three innings, but were unable to get anything going. Kevin Pillar did hit the only home run on the day for the Blue Jays, while Troy Tulowitzki picked up his 10th RBI of the year.

The Blue Jays will now look to get things rolling again, and sort out their starting rotation, when they host the Boston Red Sox Tuesday. The three game set against Boston will finish off a nine game homestand for the Jays.
