For the sixth time in his CFL career, Brendon LaBatte has been named a CFL All-Star. The announcement was made by the league Tuesday.

The Weyburn native, who played high school football at Weyburn Comprehensive School, and collegiate football at the University of Regina, just finished his 11th season in the CFL. He played in all 18 regular season games, playing at the left guard and centre positions.

LaBatte was also named the Riders’ 2018 Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman.

LaBatte wasn’t the only member of the Roughriders to receive an all-star nod. He was joined by three defensive players.

Halfback Ed Gainey was named to the All-Star team for the second time in his career, after getting the honours in 2017. In 18 games this year, Gainey had 51 tackles, a quarterback sack and a forced fumble. He also added three interceptions and a touchdown.

The defensive line of the Riders tormented quarterbacks all season, and two members of the squad were recognized for their efforts.

Charleston Hughes led the CFL for the third year in a row, picking up 15. The first year Rider added 35 tackles, three forced fumbles, two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery which he took 57 yards for a touchdown. This is the fifth time in his career Hughes has been named a CFL All-Star.

The other defensive lineman receiving All-Star honours is Willie Jefferson. He started all 18 regular season games for the Riders. The Texas native had 10 quarterback sacks and another 34 tackles. He also recorded two pick-sixes for a total of 146 yards. This is the second time Jefferson has been named to the CFL All-Star team, receiving the honours in 2017 as well. He was also the Riders’ 2018 Most Outstanding Player, and Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
