The Midget AA John Hulbert Construction Wings got their first notch in the win column Wednesday night. They beat their rivals from Estevan, the Midget Bruins, by a final of 2-1.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the first period, despite plenty of opportunities. Weyburn’s Matt Dutchak turned away all eight shots he faced in the opening frame, while Zane Winter stopped all nine shots he faced in the Estevan crease.

In the second period, the Wings stepped up the offence, putting 15 shots on goal, and were finally able to get one past Winter. Tanner Rowland scored at the 8:46 mark of the period, his first of the 2018-19 campaign. Gavin Doud picked up the assist on the goal.

Before the end of the period, though, the Bruins would find a way to tie things up. Dalton Schrader scored for the Bruins with 4:30 left on the clock, sending the teams to the locker room after 40 minutes tied 1-1.

It wouldn’t take long for the deadlock to be broken in the third period. Just 61 seconds into the frame, Mitchell McDonald scored the go-ahead goal for the Wings. McDonald’s second of the season, it was assisted by Brogan Schmeltzer.

The Midget AA Wings will now prepare for a trip to Swift Current on the weekend. They will be playing a pair of games against the 2-0 Swift Current Midget Broncos.
