It has been a busy summer for Weyburn’s Ty Petersen. The lacrosse goalie has been playing with the Weyburn Thrashers Bantam team, the Barracudas in Regina and practicing with Team Saskatchewan in Saskatoon ahead of nationals. He has also been selected to play with the Junior Rush at a National Lacrosse League-sponsored event in Oakville in August.

Not bad for someone who started the sport two years ago.

“I played football and baseball, and I saw the poster for the lacrosse sign up in 2017, and decided to give it a try, and I’ve really enjoyed it,” Petersen told Discover Weyburn.

While he has been playing with all these teams, working hard in practice day in and day out, others have been noticing the talent and dedication. It paid off with an announcement last weekend in Saskatoon when Petersen was selected first overall by the Saskatchewan SWAT in the Junior A Draft for Bantam-age players.

“Couldn't take the smile off my face for a while”, Petersen said.

The SWAT play in the Rocky Mountain League, a Junior A circuit with teams in Saskatoon, Calgary, Okotoks, St. Albert and Edmonton. The champion of the league has the opportunity to advance to play for the Minto Cup, which is the national championship for junior A lacrosse.

The adventures for Petersen will really start August 8th to 15th. He will be playing with Team Saskatchewan at nationals in Saskatoon. There won’t be much time to rest, though.

He will be patrolling the crease for the Junior Rush as they head to Oakville for the NLL Junior Tournament, which will feature players from across North America representing the teams in the NLL in the peewee, bantam and midget age groups.

Petersen does know where he wants his lacrosse career to take him, though.

“Senior, maybe, and then, hopefully, the NLL.”
