While the 2019-2020 SJHL season didn’t get an actual conclusion, teams are already looking ahead to what they can do for the 2020-21 season, including the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings.

The head coach and general manager, Rich Pilon, has been busy working the phones. After all, the travel situation is rather limited thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. His efforts, though, are paying off, as the team is attracting a number of players who have signed on for the upcoming season.

One of the biggest names so far signed by the Red Wings has been Connor McGrath. The 03-born forward spent last season with the midget AAA Moose Jaw Warriors. In his first season in the SMAAAHL, he picked up 49 goals in 44 games. He also recorded a point with the Red Wings, as he was called up for three games as an AP skater.

McGrath, who is said to already be drawing attention from NCAA Division 1 programs, came up through the Humboldt Bantam system where he had 75 points in 61 games over two seasons. He also picked up 35 points in 32 games at the Prairie Hockey Academy, which plays in the CSSHL.

Another signing for the Red Wings is Elvis Gorontzy-Slack. Originally from Jasper, Alberta, he played with the Grand Forks Border Bruins of the KIJHL last season. He scored 28 goals in 42 games and finished the year with 50 points. Prior to making the move to Junior B hockey, he played for the Banff Hockey Academy in the CSSHL.

Pilon is also looking to add some size to the roster for the upcoming season. To help with that, the Red Wings signed 02-born defenceman Austyn Hansen. He played with the Grande Prairie Storm Midget AAA club last year.

From the blueline, Hansens had four goals and seven assists in 28 games last season. He has also been known to play up as a forward when needed.

The SJHL is scheduled to hold its league meetings in June. At that time the league will also conduct the 2020 Bantam Draft, and set the schedule for the coming season.
