The Weyburn Red Wings are on a streak, winning their fifth in a row Sunday afternoon against the La Ronge Ice Wolves. The Wings beat the visitors 5-1, taking command early with four goals in the first period. Carter Phair stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced to earn the win between the pipes.

The scoring started just seven seconds into the opening period when Jessie Young notched his first of the season. Off of the opening faceoff, Young came in on the left wing and fired a wrist shot. The shot was originally stopped by La Ronge goalie Luke Lush, but it went up and over him into the net, giving Weyburn the lead.

Just two minutes later, Dawson Atamanchuk picked up his second goal of the season. The play started as Cade Kowalski brought the puck through the neutral zone, then cut over to middle and passed it forward to Atamanchuk who spun around with a backhand which went in past Lush.

The Red Wings had to wait a short bit before their next goal. At the 11:12 mark, Erik Olson scored his second of the year. The blueliner fired a wrist shot after taking the feed from Kowalski on the power play, putting it in on a one-timer from the right-hand faceoff circle.

Ben Hiltz made it a 4-0 lead after taking a pass up from Cole Woodliffe. Hiltz danced his way past the defense, then from the left-hand side of the goalmouth, put it in past Lush. For Hiltz, it was his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The goal by Hiltz would spell the end of the night for Lush, as he was then replaced by Jordan Frey with just over five minutes remaining in the first period of play.

In the second period, the Red Wings kept up the pressure early. Just 3:47 into the period, Olson scored his second goal of the game.

Woodliffe took the initial shot, and Frey kicked out the rebound, which Hiltz slid back to Olson, who hammered it past Frey to make it 5-0.

The Ice Wolves would break the shutout bid of Carter Phair just over a minute later. Jason Bednarski scored his fourth of the season.

After the game, Woodliffe, who picked up three assists in the game, said it all came down to remembering the basics as a key to the five-game winning streak.

“I think we’re just trying to keep things simple. Stick to the process, play our game and let things fall into place kinda as they do.”

Assistant coach Brock Appleyard says while the streak is good, with a looming trip to the four teams of the Sherwood Division, more work is needed.

“Obviously we have to pick our game up because these games on the road are going to be a lot harder, especially when you’re going into places like Flin Flon and Nipawin, and Melfort being good this year, we have to pick our game up if we want to win up there.”

The win Sunday also helping the Red Wings to earn honorable mention in the CJHL Top 20 Rankings, which came out early Monday morning. The Red Wings currently boast a record of 7-2-1 and haven’t lost since the SJHL Showcase in September. They will be looking to keep the streak alive Saturday when they entertain the Nipawin Hawks at Crescent Point Place.
