The Weyburn Red Wings will be opening the wild card round of the SJHL playoffs at home Sunday after they beat the Terriers 5-1 in Yorkton. The win secured 7th place overall in the SJHL for the Wings, and they will be playing the Melville Millionaires in the survivor series round.

The WIngs didn’t waste much time in getting on the board. Cade Kowalski scored 40 seconds into the game when Mike Eskra through the puck through the crease from his stomach. It went right over to Kowalski, who wasted little time in burying it past Yorkton starter Joe Marcouiller.

Before the second period was over, Eskra would make it a 2-0 game. He buried a shot from the top of the slot in the twice. Jessie Young and Ty Brown assisted on the goal, which would hold up as the game-winner.

The Wings continued the offensive pressure in the second period. Cole Woodliffe made it 3-0 just past the halfway mark of the period. Dylan McCabe and Ben Hiltz assisted on the goal by Woodliffe, which was essentially a give and go along the right wing board. With the time and space, Woodliffe made no mistakes.

The Wings would add one more goal before the end of the period. Cade Kowalski fired a shot on goal from the point while the Wings were on the power play. Marcouiller made the initial stop, but Brown put the puck in, giving the Wings a 4-0 edge.

Before the middle frame was over, though, Yorkton would get on the board. Dino Antoniadis would take a loose puck in the crease, and push it past Arik Weersink, breaking the shutout bid for the Wings goalie.

In the third, the Wings would restore the four-goal lead. Jeremy Velazquez took a pass from Dexter Robinson, and in the process of making a move to pull Marcouiller out of position, lost an edge, and fell to the ice. He kept the puck on his stick, though, and slid it in behind the goalie for the goal.

The Wings now prepare for the next step in their path to the Canalta Cup, They take on the Melville Millionaires at Crescent Point Place Sunday. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available for the game starting at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
