Derick Smith scored twice for the Weyburn Red Wings Friday night, but it wasn’t enough for the team, as the Wings fell 5-2 to the Bruins in preseason action in Estevan.

The Wings opened the scoring in the first period when Smith picked up his first of the preseason. The goal was set up by Jessie Young and Cade Kowalski.

The Bruins would respond within five minutes, as Johnny Witzke beat Carter Phair with a point shot. It would become a 2-1 Estevan game before the end of the period when Jerzy Martin scored for the home team.

The Red Wings would even it up four minutes into the middle frame, when Smith notched his second of the game, once again set up by Young and Kowalski. The tie was short lived, though, as Kaelan Holt scored for the Bruins just 26 seconds later. Before the period was over, the Bruins made it a two goal deficit, with Jake Heerspink solving Jake MacLennan with a point shot that made its way through traffic.

Holt scored one more time, before the halfway mark of the period, to make it 5-2.

The two teams will meet one more time as both teams close out the pre-season. The game is Saturday night in Weyburn. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at Crescent Point Place.
