The Weyburn Red Wings ran out of time Saturday night, falling 4-3 to the Melfort Mustangs as they closed out their road trip through the Sherwood Division. With the loss, the Wings finished the trip with a record of 1-3. They remain three points back of the Estevan Bruins for first in the Viterra Division after the loss and still have a game in hand.

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the first period when Loch Morrison scored from the point on the power play at the 7:37 mark. The goal was his team-leading 12th of the season. The Wings were quick to respond, though.

Sean Olson tallied his first of the season just two and a half minutes later. The goal was assisted by Will Cruise, and Mike Eskra. Eskra would then give the Red Wings the lead in the second period with his fifth of the campaign. Olson assisted the goal, with Garrett Szeremley collecting the other assist for the Wings.

The lead would last until the halfway mark of the second period on what could be considered a controversial goal. Justin Ball scored unassisted for the Mustangs, just three seconds after a Red Wings power play expired. The goal came with Sean Olson on the bench, getting attention from the trainer, after suffering a cut on the face from the errant stick of Mustangs defender Ashton Oakes, while setting up at the top of the slot, waiting for a pass which slid right past him while he was prone on the ice.

Melfort would then make it a 3-2 game when Carson Albrecht scored his ninth goal of the year. The lead wouldn’t make it to the end of the period, though. Dexter Robinson proceeded to score for the Wings, his second as a Red Wing, with 1:58 left on the clock.

The Mustangs buzzed around Weyburn goaltender Arik Weersink throughout the third period. Melfort outshot the visitors 17-2 in the final frame, with Weersink standing tall, except for the last shot he faced in the game. Ball scored his second of the night with 1:44 remaining, giving Melfort the lead, which they held on to for the win.

The Red Wings will get a few days rest before they are back on the road. They travel to Melville on Wednesday, where they will face the Millionaires.
