The Weyburn Red Wings will have their hands full tonight, when they host the Battlefords North Stars for game three of their best-of-seven SJHL quarterfinal series. The battlefords head into the game with a 2-0 lead, after taking both games in North Battleford on the weekend.
The Wings put up a challenge Friday night. North Stars head coach Nate Bedford said if the game went another ten minutes, it was likely the Wings would have picked up the win. In the end, though, the North Stars picked up the 4-3 victory.
Saturday night, it was a completely different game. The Stars jumped out to an early lead, and never looked back, taking the game 8-3. Wings head coach Wes Rudy said the team left rookie goaltender Cody Levesque out to dry, and didn’t do much to support him. There were some bright spots in the game, though. Braden Mellon picked up two goals himself, as he tried to put the team on his back to pick up the win. Ian Parker also recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick in the loss, with his goal being a beautiful dangle on a shorthanded breakaway.
Both teams are expecting a game closer to the 2-1 finals they had earlier in the season when the puck drops tonight. Weyburn will be looking to put the pressure on the North Stars early, who made the trip to Weyburn today, and could have to worry about working off bus legs. For the Wings, they have home ice advantage, and will be looking for a loud and energetic crowd to get them going.
The puck drops at Crescent Point Place at 7:30 p.m. You can listen to all the action live on Red Wing Radio K106, beginning with the pregame show at 7:20 p.m.
