While the Red Wings ultimately couldn't end their losing skid, it was a game they can be proud of. They took the first place Nipawin Hawks to overtime before falling 2–1.

In fact, if it wasn't for Patrick Pugliese making a couple big saves in the third period, the Red Wings might have been able to steal a win and two points over the stingy Hawks. One save in particular stands out, as Pugliese fully stretched out and just got the got toe out on a Ty Brown wraparound midway through the third period on what would have been a sure goal.

The Red Wings were able to limit opposition chances and generated good looks of their own. Cody Levesque had a strong game in goal making 31 saves on the 33 shots he faced. He had no chance on the OT winner.

Once again the Wings were unable to draw first blood but they didn't let it affect them on this night. Brodie Girod gave Nipawin an early lead at 5:29 of the opening period. Weyburn settled in and played one of their better games of the season.

"It was a much better effort and there was much more compete, engagement and communication on the ice. You could tell these guys came here to play tonight," Red Wings coach Kyle Haines said. "To get a point against Nipawin, I'm not happy with it but I'll accept it. They're a tough team to play against and it was just a much better effort all around."

Weyburn had some push back and a few great chances on the powerplay, but it would take a greasy one to get them on the scoreboard. A wild goalmouth scramble that lasted for nearly 10 seconds ended in a Drew Anderson goal, his fourth of the season.

"It was a scramble at the night and the puck just squirted loose right to Andy. Everyone kind of thought the play was dead and it went right on Andy's stick and in the net. It was one of the weirder goals I've seen, but hey, we'll take it," Haines said.

The teams went back-and-forth with offensive opportunities, however, it was the Red Wings who generated more quality chances and they didn't allow Nipawn to get their cycle game going. The Hawks are a big team and like to wear you down below the goal line, but the Wings did a great job of matching their physicality and taking away their space.

The physical game ramped up in the third period with a few big hits from guys like Burke Johnstone, Mkyllan Couture and Zac Gladu. Unfortunately for the Red Wings, forward Sean Olson was caught by a hit and stayed down on the ice for a few minutes. He left the game and did not return. Players and coaches on Nipawin's bench could be seen cheering and clapping, as Olson layed on the ice in obvious discomfort.

Haines provided no updates or speculation on Olson's ailment after the game.

"He took a pretty big blow from a pretty big guy. Ollie is a huge impact player for us and I hope he's okay and we can get him back in the lineup as quick as possible," he said.

There were nervous moments in the third period on both benches, but the game was eventually decided by Zach Ziegler's game-winner. It was a perfect feed from Jeremy Bisson to set him up and send the home fans home disappointed.

There were plenty of positives to takeaway and hopefully this bunch can get their swagger back in time for a date with the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night. Puck drop is set for 7:30 as the Wings look to break back in the win column.
