The Weyburn Red Wings had their winning streak halted at three games Tuesday night, as they fell 2-1 to the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox. The Wings, who have recently found an offensive touch not seen since the early months of the season, threw everything they had at Benjamin Patt, the starting goalie for the Hounds, who made 22 saves for the win. At the other end, Carter Phair played outstanding as well, with just the two goals getting past him.

The Hounds opened the scoring in the first period, when Adam Dawe put the puck past a screened Phair just 1:41 into the first period. The goal was assisted by Ben Duperreault and Chaz Smedsrud, as that line continues to generate points for Notre Dame.

Neither team would be able to solve the goaltenders for the rest of the period, and it wouldn’t be until the halfway mark of the second that either team could find twine again. The next team to strike, though, was the Hounds. Duperreault scored his 34th of the season, giving him a league leading 70 points on the season, with Smedsrud getting the assist, along with Jacob Arsenault.

Weyburn would continue to press, and with just over a minute remaining in the second, Carson Rose extended his goal scoring streak to four games, as he took a feed from the faceoff, skated over to the top of the slot, and wired the puck in past Patt. Braden Mellon was credited with the assist, as Rose now has seven goals in the past four games.

Neither team was able to score in the third period, despite a number of outstanding chances both ways. Patt made a number of big saves in the period, while the Wings were also bitten by a little bad luck, with three shots going post and out. The best chance of the period came from the stick of Erik Olson, who had all the time in the world at the top of the slot, and his wrist shot was snagged by Patt with the trapper in dramatic fashion to preserve the lead.

Despite the loss, the Wings still hold onto the sixth spot in the overall standings, ahead of the Yorkton Terriers by just one point. The Terriers also lost Tuesday night, as they fell 5-4 to the Estevan Bruins. The other game in the SJHL Tuesday saw the Nipawin Hawks rout the Melfort Mustangs 7-2.

Weyburn is now off until Friday, when they will be opening a home and home series with the Estevan Bruins. The game will be played at Crescent Point Place, with a 7:30 p.m. start time. The game will be broadcast live on Red Wing Radio K106.
