The third meeting of the season between the Weyburn Red Wings and Humboldt Broncos didn’t disappoint, but the thriller ended in delight for the home fans as they watched their Humboldt Broncos win 5–4 in a shootout.

A back-and-forth game was highlighted by a wild five-goal third period that was capped off by Connor Pyne tying it for the Red Wings with just 2:16 to play. The extra session solved nothing, but the Wings did kill off a 4-on-3 powerplay to keep themselves alive.

“It was a barnburner for sure. It was an emotional third period with lots of goals back-and-forth and it was quite stressful trying to manage everything. I would have loved two points tonight, but we’ll take a point anyway we can get it,” head coach Kyle Haines said postgame.

Brayden Camrud and Michael Clarke were both successful in the shootout for Humboldt, while Jacob Piller and Justin Plett were stymied at the other end. Despite the loss, it could easily be considered a successful game for Weyburn’s standards, who know move back within two points of Melville for the final playoff spot.

Dawson McKenzie got the party started early with his 11th goal of the season to give the Wings a 1–0 lead. Cody Levesque was excellent again on Friday night and bailed his team out early as the Broncos pressed for the equalizer. He finished the night with 46 saves on 50 shots.

“He was good, especially at the start when they came out firing. I think they had 15 shots in the first seven minutes and Cody really made some big saves to keep us in the game early,” Haines explained.

Humboldt’s attack would pay off as they would storm back with a pair of goals before the end of the first. Camrud and Logan Foster tallied for the Broncos to put them ahead at the first intermission.

The second period saw lots of action but no goals put up by either side. However, the third period more than made up for it.

A nifty feed in front by Jordan Kazymyra left Jacob Piller all alone and he put it top corner to tie things up at two. Just 25 seconds after that, captain Ty Brown finished off a beautiful passing play and put the Wings back on top 3–2.

The fireworks were far from done though. With 5:55 remaining Clarke sniped one past Levesque for his 25th of the season. He set up linemate Drew Warkentine 19 seconds later on a perfect backdoor pass and suddenly it was the Red Wings trailing late in the game.

Pyne’s late heroics were set up by McKenzie’s third point of the night. Lost in the madness from earlier in the stanza was Kazymyra’s first career fight in the SJHL. He mixed it up with Cole Kirkup and landed a flurry of punches while not wearing any.

The aforementioned overtime was exciting, but for the second straight game between these teams, a shootout was needed to decide a winner.

“They’re a very strong team with a lot of fire power. We showed some resiliency by bouncing back and coming back a few times, so I was happy to see that,” Haines said.

These two teams will square off again tonight for the final meeting of the season series. Weyburn leads 2–1 and can pick up two huge points with a similar effort this evening.
