Some shocking news from Riderville on Saturday night as star wide receiver Duron Carter has been released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Carter sent out a tweet saying:

That was followed shortly by an email from the Riders confirming that Carter had been released.

The outspoken receiver was in his second season with Saskatchewan and had spent most of the season playing at defensive back.

During his time in Saskatchewan, Carter had turned into a fan favourite with his engaging personality.

He ran into some trouble with the law over the offseason with two separate marijuana arrests. He was given an absolute discharge after pleading guilty to charges in Winnipeg, while his arrest in Saskatoon will be heading to trial in December.

Carter had 73 catches for 1,043 yards and eight touchdowns last season for the Riders. He has posted eight catches for 111 yards and a touchdown in seven games so far this season.

The Riders are in their second bye week of the season. Their next game action is coming up next Sunday when they host the Calgary Stampeders at Mosaic Stadium.
