It was a surreal moment for Weyburn’s Preston Shupe, as he raised the Belgian Cup with his team, HYC Herentals, on the weekend.

“It was an incredible game, it was an awesome atmosphere, you know, it was packed, it was loud, and just to get the game-winning goal was kind of a bonus,” Shupe said in an interview with Discover Weyburn Tuesday morning. “It was definitely something I won’t forget.”

Shupe signed with HYC Herentals in the summer. They have been one of the top teams in Belgium in recent years, and they were looking to repeat their recent successes at the national level. They did so with their 1-0 win over Bulldogs Liege Saturday, with Shupe’s goal the only one on the game.

Shupe scored the goal with 13:01 remaining in the third period, and they held on to record the victory.

While the national championships are out of the way, there is still the league to finish up for the year.

HYC Herentals plays in the BeNeLiga, a top tiered European league comprised of Belgian and Dutch teams.

“We've got another month or so of the regular season, then we have the regular season, and hopefully we’ll have a good run in playoffs as well,” Shupe added.

Once the BeNeliga season is over, Shupe will be returning to Weyburn, where he runs Top Notch Training with Weyburn Red Wings head coach Kyle Haines. As for next season, he doesn’t know what the future will hold quite yet.

“We really do enjoy it over here, and I’ve been in some talks with the team, but we’ll see,” Shupe said. “Taking it one day at a time, and we’ll see what will happen at the end of the season.”
